A report at the DigitTimes claims that Intel is poised to launch a pair of Atom parts with DDR3 support, and that report has been confirmed by a slip-up on Toshiba's French site. DigiTimes doesn't give a specific date for the launch of the upcoming the N455 and N475—the publication says only that the launch will happen "shortly." And given that Toshiba France has already put out a page for its NB305-10F, which pairs an N455 with 1GB of 1066MHz DDR3, we'd expect the launch to happen any day.
Also allegedly on tap for June is the dual-core Atom N500 launch, along with a $575 N500-based netbook from Asus.
Given that DDR2 and DDR3 prices reached parity and then crossed over at the beginning of this month, DDR3 was bound to arrive on the Atom platform. Atom doesn't actually need DDR3 for performance reasons—DDR2 would do just fine, because Atom's bottlenecks are elsewhere. But DDR2 prices have risen while DDR3 has remained flat, and Atom systems are cost-sensitive, so it makes sense to pair Atom with the now-cheaper DDR3.
Of course, the upcoming Atom parts only mark the return, and not the introduction, of DDR3 to Atom-based netbooks. Back before they were given the boot by Intel via the DMI bus licensing dispute, NVIDIA's ION platform paired early Atoms with DDR3 memory. So soon it will once again be possible to get a new Atom netbook, and even an ION 2-based netbook, with DDR3—not that this will make any real-world performance difference for most netbook users.

Last mile copper loops are largely considered a dead-end technology; fiber-to-the-home and coaxial cable systems offer much more headroom, so much so that even the recent National Broadband Plan lamented that most Americans would soon have only zero or one options for truly high-speed broadband. DSL users would remain stuck in the slow lane.
But DSL is not quite dead, and new research out of Bell Labs has resulted in a new speed record: 300Mbps.
So is DSL's future so bright that it needs to wear shades? We wouldn't invest in the shades just yet. This 300Mbps demo requires the DSL user to be within 400 meters of the local node; when the distance is extended to 1km, top speeds decline to 100Mbps. For those further away from the access point, as many in America are—my own home is twice that distance—these top speeds will be substantially lower.
Still, it's far better than the 6Mbps top speed AT&T offers me now (some AT&T U-verse customers can now get up to 24Mbps), but the new technology has other issues. Foremost among them: it requires the bonding of two DSL lines to each home.
This sort of "channel bonding" has long been used in DOCSIS cable systems and has been tested in the lab on DSL, but it never quite seems to make it to market in a big way.
To hit these high speeds, Bell Labs used channel bonding, vectoring (technology that avoids crosstalk interference between wires), and an analog "phantom mode." Phantom mode "involves the creation of a virtual or 'Phantom' channel that supplements the two physical wires that are the standard configuration for copper transmission lines," according to the lab.
Combine all these technologies together, use a pair of DSL lines, and test in the lab, and you get 300Mbps. The technology may be attractive to telcos who prefer to milk the value of their copper networks without springing for a more substantial fiber-optic upgrade.
Gee Rittenhouse, head of Research at Bell Labs, made this point, saying, "What makes DSL Phantom Mode such an important breakthrough is that it combines cutting edge technology with an attractive business model that will open up entirely new commercial opportunities for service providers, enabling them in particular, to offer the latest broadband IP-based services using existing network infrastructure."

Scanning an audience which came to celebrate his second straight runaway NBA MVP award, James pointed out his former high school coaches and best friends. He praised his mom, Gloria, who somehow raised him after giving birth when she was just 16. He had a special message for his girlfriend, Savannah, and their two young sons, LeBron Jr. and Bryce.
James thanked them all, and then singled out one special group.
"I'm sorry," he said Sunday, halting the ceremony at the University of Akron's James A. Rhodes Arena. "But all my teammates, you have to come up here with me, man."

HP announced Wednesday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase struggling smartphone maker Palm in an all cash deal worth 1.2 billion.
Under terms of the agreement, HP will pay $5.70 per share of Palm common stock for a total of nearly $1 billion, or approximately $1.2 billion when Palm's debt is factored into the mix. The transaction has been approved by the HP and Palm boards of directors.
“Palm’s innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP’s mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices,” said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. “And, Palm possesses significant IP assets and has a highly skilled team. The smartphone market is large, profitable and rapidly growing, and companies that can provide an integrated device and experience command a higher share. Advances in mobility are offering significant opportunities, and HP intends to be a leader in this market.”
HP believes that its global scale and financial strength combined with Palm’s webOS platform will enhance its ability to compete more aggressively in the fast-growing, highly profitable smartphone and mobile device markets. Among the features of webOS that HP is looking to leverage are multitasking and always up-to-date information sharing across applications, according to a joint press release from the two companies.
“We’re thrilled by HP’s vote of confidence in Palm’s technological leadership, which delivered Palm webOS and iconic products such as the Palm Pre. HP’s longstanding culture of innovation, scale and global operating resources make it the perfect partner to rapidly accelerate the growth of webOS,” said Jon Rubinstein, chairman and chief executive officer, Palm. “We look forward to working with HP to continue to deliver industry-leading mobile experiences to our customers and business partners.”
Under the terms of the merger agreement, Palm stockholders will receive $5.70 in cash for each share of Palm common stock that they hold at the closing of the merger. The merger consideration takes into account the updated guidance and other financial information being released by Palm this afternoon. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of Palm’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close during HP’s third fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2010.
Palm’s current chairman and CEO, Jon Rubinstein, is expected to remain with the company.
Palm vs iPhone
Palm was one of the original smartphone vendors, but let its platform slide off into irrelevance. In 2006 the company began licensing Microsoft's Windows Mobile, a move that nearly doubled Microsoft's market share but which did little to help Palm's struggling fortunes.
After Apple debuted the iPhone in 2007, Palm's products plummeted. Over the next year, Palm hired Rubinstein, who had served as the iPod chief at Apple, along with a number of Apple engineers, resulting in the development of the webOS.
While hailed as a major competitive threat to the iPhone at its launch, Palm failed to deliver high quality hardware and was slow to finish its SDK for third party developers. The rushed competitive effort fell flat with last summer's launch of the iPhone 3GS, leaving Palm's prospects uncertain. Cloud computing failures the company suffered through last fall only made things worse.
The only hope for Palm has been the idea that an established manufacturer would buy it and continue to invest in developing its novel smartphone operating system. HTC and Lenovo were considered frontrunners, but HP's purchase makes sense given that company's failed efforts to develop a strong presence in the smartphone category.
HP is a long term partner of Microsoft, but has seen little traction for its PDAs and smartphones based on Windows Mobile. Backed with a motivated, moneyed partner, Palm's webOS may be able to gain a significant profile that will make it a serious competitor to Android, Symbian and the upcoming Windows Phone 7 in their efforts to rival the iPhone and RIM's BlackBerry.
HP has never managed a significant software platform of its own, so the departure into becoming an integrated hardware and software company like Apple and RIM rather than just another device maker licensing other vendors' software like Dell or HTC will be a new role for the company.

The current crop of 3D TVs that are on the market all use glasses to allow the viewer to see the 3D content. Most of the 3D TVs on the market use active rather than passive glasses and the glasses can cost $150 per set or more.
The cost of the glasses and the fact that many find 3D glasses of any type uncomfortable are a couple of the major issues that are keeping users from adopting 3D TVs right now. Thankfully there is a lot of action going on in the 3D TV market with screens that don’t require glasses to view the 3D images.
The Nintendo 3DS may well be one of the hottest upcoming consumer products using a screen that needs no glasses to provide 3D images. Sharp is also working on 3D screens that need no glasses and its screen tech may well be what Nintendo has chosen for its 3DS portable console.
Toshiba Mobile Display (TMD) has announced its own 3D screen that doesn't require glasses. The screen is a 21-inch autostereoscopic HD display that uses multi-parallax technology. The screen uses a "light field" display to produce real 3D images that can be viewed across a wide range of viewing angles. The wide viewing angle is important in a produce like a TV where users will not always be directly in front of the set.
The imaging system used in the TMD screen promises to reduce eye fatigue during extended viewing and uses a multi-parallax design allowing for motion parallax that sets needing glasses can’t provide. TMD reports that using the multi-parallax method allows the production of 3D images that change depending on the viewer's position.
TMD's multi-parallax technology has also overcome previous issues with parallax displays that result in the loss of screen resolution. TMD was able to overcome the screen resolution issue by using low-temperature poly-silicon technology. The screen also has a lens sheet that controls reductions in surface luminance intensity to provide a panel that is as bright as normal 2D screens.

It's official - Nokia unveiled their new flagship, the Nokia N8. With 12MP camera and 720p video recording, the latest handset from the Finnish company is on track to becoming the new imaging champ in the mobile phone world.
The 28mm wide angle camera on the Nokia N8 is equipped with Carl Zeiss optics and a xenon flash. Nokia says that the image sensor "rivals those found in compact digital cameras". The camera can also capture 720p HD video at 25 frames per second and offers built-in video editing tools.
The Nokia N8 also features two different TV-out interfaces - the standard 3.5mm audio jack and a mini-HDMI port (a first for the GSM world). The Nokia N8 also features Dolby Digital Plus Surround Sound over the HDMI link.
The Nokia N8 offers up to 3 hours and 20 minutes of video capture or 7 hours of video playback (6 over HDMI) thanks to the 1200mAh battery. The talk time is impressive too - 12 hours, and the battery will last for 50 hours of music playback.
The Nokia N8 is connectivity champ - it is a true globetrotter with quad-band GSM/EDGE and five-band 3G. Yep, five bands - 850/900/1700/1900/2100. It has Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS with A-GPS (plus other positioning methods), microUSB with USB On-the-go and a built-in FM transmitter. Having mentioned GPS, the N8 will of course come with Ovi Maps for free voice-guided navigation.
The N8 is the first device that runs Symbian^3 and it also has support for the Qt cross-platform apps and UI framework that should allow development of apps that run on Symbian and MeeGo. It has multiple homescreens and is proficient in social networking. It also offers improved application and graphics performance.
